What to Pray for in Recovery?

A Prayer to Move Forward -

When we talk about addiction, let’s face it—there’s no sugarcoating it. You’re in a battle. And too often, we treat prayer like a wishlist for rescue, like a handout. Asking to be plucked out of a mess or for things to magically work out without consequence. But here’s the thing: real growth doesn’t happen that way. Not in life and definitely not in recovery.

If you’re praying for something in the middle of your struggle with addiction, let’s shift the focus. This isn’t about asking to be saved from consequences. It’s about finding clarity, vision, and strength to face what’s in front of you and to walk forward with purpose. Because the fact is, moving forward is exactly what you need—and it’s a choice only you can make.

In my experience, I don’t tell people to pray for favors or strength, and I don’t suggest they beg for freedom from their past. I say, pray for vision. Ask for guidance on the path that lies ahead of you—the one where you’re not trapped by labels, but rather seeing yourself as someone who’s moving forward. You are not an “alcoholic” or an “addict.” You’re a person who once had an addiction problem, but you can leave it behind if you’re ready to walk a different road.

Here’s what I know for sure: your journey will change once you start praying for gratitude, for the ability to see your future clearly, and for the courage to step into it. Don’t waste time praying to undo your past. Instead, look toward what’s next, because there’s a future for you beyond addiction.

When clients ask me, “What should I pray for?” my answer is simple. Pray for strength, and pray to see the way forward (your new path). Ask for clarity on what’s right in front of you, on how to take one step, and then another. Pray for gratitude, too—for even in your toughest times, there are things worth holding onto, and recognizing those will keep you grounded.

This is your life, and if you want it to change, you’re the one who has to show up every day. So ask yourself, are you ready to pray for the vision and power to move forward? Are you ready to stop wishing away the past and start building a future?

If you’re ready to do the work, let’s talk. Schedule a call at Holding Doors to see if our approach is right for you. Together, we’ll work to make that path forward a reality. Don’t wait—your future is waiting for you.
